Too many books, too little time

On friday my boss, Chris, offered to lend me another book. I already have two of his so I told him I'm reading too many books right now, and that I'd have to finish a few before I took on another. He asked me what I was reading and when I couldn't even remember all of them, I realized that I might have a problem with starting new books before finishing what I'm reading. Over the weekend I decided to tally up everything I'm "reading" right now. Here's the list (in no specific order):

  1. Patriots*

  2. Guards, Guards*

  3. Prophesy - Key to the future*

  4. Uncommon Genius

  5. If You Want To Write

  6. Elements of Style**

  7. Pirate Hunter

  8. Bonds that Make Us Free**

  9. Book of Mormon Student Manual (Religion 121–122)**

  10. The Brothers: A Novel*

  11. Guerilla Marketing**

  12. Don't Make Me Think**

  13. Be Prepared: A Practical Handbook for New Dads

  14. Why Work Sucks and How to Fix It

* Borrowed from someone else

** Rereading

Though I recently threw away A Clash of Kings by George RR Martin (too trashy for me) when I was only halfway through it, I rarely leave a book unfinished. Even if it's terrible, I can't stop--I just have a weird obsessive/compulsive-like need to finish. However, if I'm going to continue to finish every book I start I'm going to need to do a better job of not reading so many books at once. So here's me committing not to start any new books 'till I've pared this list down to at least single digits.

Do you ever find yourself reading too many books at once? What are you reading right now?

  1. WOW!! I was wondering how you kept them all straight. I always see you reading a different book everyday. LOL I had no idea it was this many.
and...NO I never read too many books at once. I think one is usually a lot of book for me. I don't count the ones I listen to as reading, because I can physically only read 1 book at a time, it's really time consuming. Unless of course it was the Twilight Series and then I made an exception and was reading 2 books at once. :)

  2. Reading that many books at one time takes talent! I could never read more than one book at a time. I would be so confused1 I am reading The Host right now and have been trying to get through it for the last two months. I usually don't take that long to read a book, but this one has been hard to get into for me. I think you may want to pare down that list before adding any more!

  3. Must be a Winegar thing Clark. I know that Treb does this and I do too. I'm currently reading Crytonomicon, I Am American and So Can You! and The Meaning of the Night. Not nearly as much as you, but I'm older than you. My eyes don't have as much energy as yours do.

  4. I'm the same way. I just finished Dracula this morning, am still in the middle of A Confederacy of Dunces (which I need to finish soon because I've already renewed it twice at the library), The Ode Less Traveled (a book about writing poetry - oh, how I love Stephen Fry) and I'll soon be starting The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao. I finally gave up on The Yiddish Policeman's Union because I just couldn't get into it and there were too many other things on my list. It's definitely a family trait.
